California drunk driver arrested in death of 3-year-old boy

A fatal car wreck is tragic in any circumstance, but one that claims the life of a child is especially difficult to cope with. When a drunk driver takes the wheel after imbibing too much alcohol, he or she typically does not consider the devastating consequences that may occur. A recent crash in San Ramon, California demonstrates how horrific drunk driving accidents can be.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the wreck happened on Friday, September 9. At approximately 6:20 p.m., a disabled sedan was parked on the shoulder of northbound Highway 680. The car contained a woman and her three children, ages 1, 3 and 11.

A white SUV driven by a 39-year-old woman traveling northbound along the highway collided with the back end of the sedan. When paramedics arrived on the scene, they transferred all three children to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland for treatment. The mother received major injuries in the crash and was taken to another hospital. The 3-year-old boy later passed away from his injuries at the hospital. The driver of the SUV was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence.

Surviving loved ones facing similar situations in California can rightfully pursue a wrongful death lawsuit against the alleged drunk driver, seeking reimbursement for any monetary and non-monetary damages caused by the accident. Regardless of whether the driver is found guilty of any criminal charges, loved ones may still be able to establish liability in a California civil court. Seeking the counsel of a wrongful death attorney could be the first step in determining the path to seek reparations.
