Female cyclist killed by drunk driver in California hit and run

The female cyclist struck in a hit-and-run bicycle crash in California has died. She was hit by an SUV while riding along the side of the road on the night of Jan. 16. The allegedly drunk driver who struck her now faces three felonies for his blood alcohol level and for leaving the scene of the accident where he had injured the woman.

The 32-year-old woman was cycling westbound along the Golden State Highway's north curb line that Monday at around 9:30 p.m. when she was struck by an SUV. The suspect reportedly fled the scene, leaving the injured woman where she lay. Witnesses assisted police in tracking the suspect to where he was later located at a nearby gas station.

The woman was scheduled to undergo surgery, but on Wednesday, Jan. 18, she passed away from the injuries sustained in the accident. The 48-year-old defendant was taken into police custody but has since posted bail, which was set at $50,000. He is now facing three felonies, including DUI with a blood alcohol level at .08 causing bodily injury, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs causing bodily injury, and hit and run resulting in injury.

The family of the woman who was killed by the accused drunk driver of the SUV may choose to seek the counsel of an attorney to explore their legal options in filing a suit against the man. Monetary damages awarded in a successfully presented suit could be used toward medical and funeral expenses and the grieving family's pain and suffering. Any bicyclist in California who has been injured in an accident due to another driver's fault or negligence might want to consider contacting a lawyer as well.
