Happy New Year, we hope your holidays were safe and enjoyable. A number of new laws went into effect this year that may impact your work and personal life. Remember, employers often refuse to pay for traffic tickets or legal violations, even if you’re on the job.
In the article “Food Industry Unplugged,” Food Quality & Safety interviewed Attorney Steven Kronenberg to discuss the Internet of Things (IoT) and how it pertains to the food industry. IoT connects the Internet to devices such as ovens and refrigerators, which allows food industry employees to record and monitor data.
Elinor Leary and Clifton Smoot filed a lawsuit on behalf of Carlos Perezdeleon against Rush Truck Leasing and Maxon Lift Corporation for negligence, product liability and loss of consortium. The lawsuit alleges that Maxon Lift Corporation designed and manufactured a defective liftgate that was hazardous, and that Rush Truck Leasing failed to maintain the liftgate in a reasonably safe condition and failed to warn the plaintiff that the liftgate was not functioning. The liftgate fell on Carlos’ foot, crushing it.

Trial Team Leader Elinor Leary and Attorney Alexandra Hamilton filed a lawsuit on behalf of Viktor Fedchuk for negligence against PSP Property Maintenance, whose employee allegedly threw a 20-pound industrial fan/motor from the rooftop, striking Viktor in the head and causing severe injuries. The lawsuit states that during the repair of a rooftop air conditioner, a PSP Property Maintenance employee recklessly threw the industrial fan/motor from the rooftop instead of safely lowering it to the ground. The industrial fan/motor landed on Viktor’s head 25 feet below and resulted in serious head and neck injuries, which could have been prevented had the facility simply taken the proper steps to safely dispose of the air conditioning unit.
