3 recent fatal accidents result in increased bike awareness

As the height of summer has arrived, greater numbers of bicyclists have taken to the streets in California and elsewhere around the country. The higher volume of bicycle traffic, coupled with an increase in vehicles on the road, has resulted in larger numbers of wrecks involving autos and bicyclists. Recently, the deaths of three cyclists within a day in San Francisco has increased bike awareness for many of the city’s residents.

According to authorities, three separate fatal bicycle wrecks occurred in the Bay Area over one 24-hour period. Two of these incidents were hit-and run accidents, while the other was caused by a driver who stayed on the scene and is cooperating with police. While one of the drivers involved in the hit-and-run accidents has been arrested, the other is still at large.

The first accident occurred on local streets in San Francisco. Police have released a mugshot of the alleged motorist. After hitting the cyclist, the driver got out of his car, and was detained by a citizen until police arrived. The second accident occurred in Golden Gate Park, where it appears that the driver was speeding and traveling in the wrong lane. This driver is still at large, and police implore the public to provide any information about the driver.

Finally, a bicyclist was killed in Pleasanton on local streets. The woman was riding southbound on the road when a car traveling eastbound hit her. This driver is cooperating fully with police.

The drivers in all of these accidents may face criminal charges, and surviving loved ones in similar situations can pursue wrongful death lawsuits against the drivers in civil court. This may allow them to seek reimbursement for medical bills, loss of income and other damages incurred as a result of these fatal bicycle accidents. An attorney who is well-versed in California traffic laws and wrongful death litigation could help guide loved ones in the pursuit of restitution. A successful result may help further promote bike awareness to focus on protecting  bicyclists in our communities.
